Why is a 2D echo test recommended?

Color Doppler is a technique in which colors superimposed on an image of a blood vessel indicate the speed and direction of blood flow in the vessel. Color doppler test is a type of ultrasound test. What does the 2D echo test detect? 2D Echo is done to detect the following heart conditions:
  • Any underlying heart diseases or abnormalities
  • Congenital heart diseases and blood clots or tumours
  • Malfunctioning of the heart valve
  • Abnormality of blood flow within the heart
How is 2D echocardiography done?
  • Chest is uncovered and a colourless gel is applied to analyse the sound vibrations with a transducer
  • The technician moves the transducer across the various parts of the chest. The gel helps the transducer get views of the heart, its tissues and structures. The gel is removed after the test
It takes around 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete the test. It is always done in the presence of a radiologist and a cardiologist. The images received from the test can be viewed on a computer monitor, printed on paper, or recorded in DVD, and given to the patient after interpretation of results.
