Ovulation induction is a common fertility treatment aimed at stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs in a single cycle. This procedure is often employed for women who have irregular or absent ovulation. The process typically involves the administration of medications, such as clomiphene citrate or gonadotropins, which help regulate the hormones responsible for egg production.
During ovulation induction, a healthcare provider closely monitors the woman's response to the medication through ultrasound scans and blood tests. This monitoring helps determine the optimal time for egg release and ensures that the ovaries are not overstimulated, which can lead to complications like ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Once the eggs are mature, a trigger shot of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) may be given to induce ovulation, after which timed intercourse or intrauterine insemination (IUI) is recommended to increase the chances of fertilization.
